Comparison of measures of social competency in schizophrenics and the relation of social competency to socioeconomic factors.

Four measures of the process-reactive dimension in schizophrenia were intercorrelated. These measures were the UIlmann-Giovannoni scale, the Phillips scale, marital status, and the Zigler-Phillips Social Competency Index. Data from 103 male schizophrenic patients suggest preference for the UIlmannGiovannoni scale. This scale was then used to define the subjects into high and low competency groups, and the two groups were compared in terms of current socioeconomic status, socioeconomic background, and social mobility in an effort to determine whether the scale reflects personal or situational characteristics. Evidence for regarding the dimension as reflecting a personal characteristic was found.
